Player Overview
Kennedy is one of the best at avoiding striking out, with a K rate of 0.107 per plate appearance, good for the 90th percentile among qualified Big 12 hitters. His BB/PA is below average, leading to a middling on-base percentage.   Average of .310 ranks in the 75th percentile. However, a SLG in the 44th percentile, XBH/PA in the 30th, and a HR % in the 30th percentile indicate that Kennedy is not a power hitter. Grounds out 31.8% of the time, in the 2nd percentile, one of the highest GO/PA rates in the Big 12. Kennedy appears to be a ground ball and singles hitter. Would appear to benefit from a change in launch angle in order to convert more batted ball opportunities into extra-base hits.   Pitchers are best served by inducing ground balls and weak contact. Will defend the plate late in counts and can drag out at-bats to tire out a pitcher. Won’t regularly punish any mistakes that a pitcher makes

Player Overview
Ford doesn’t do a whole lot at an above-average rate, but for the sophomore, there are some good signs. His K % of 17.4% ranks above average in the 56th percentile. His BB rate of 10.8% isn’t quite as good but still ranks in the 39th percentile, not a bad sign for a freshman season. The batting eye and process appear to be sound.

Ford struggles to hit the ball hard. Low HR %, low XBH/PA, low ISO, and SLG. However, his fly out rate of 0.216 is average and a promising sign that he has a good batted ball profile. As he develops and ages, his power and strength will hopefully follow so that he can convert more of those opportunities into extra-base hits.

His good K rate indicates that the future may be bright, especially if the power and strength follow as he ages. Pitchers should do what they’re comfortable with. Lower BB rate indicates a lower level of patience and potential willingness to swing outside of the box and chase pitches.

Player Overview
Doesn’t hit the ball very hard. Below average HR rate on fly balls, 0.037 per plate appearance, and only flies out 10% of the time. Grounds out an above-average clip. ISO and SLG are far below average.

Patient hitter. Above-average BB% of 18.6%, in the 97th percentile of qualified Big 12 hitters. Compensates for low average and results in Ellis getting on base at a 0.411 clip, above average in the 82nd percentile.

Walks frequently, but no need to worry about power. Rarely hits the ball for power or in the air. Pitchers should focus their attack in the strike zone. Won’t punish mistakes with power, but will draw walks and draw out at-bats. Looks prone to swings and misses and pitches outside of the zone.

Player Overview
Todd’s greatest strength is the ability to avoid striking out. With a K rate of 10%, landing in the 92nd percentile, Todd frequently puts the ball in play. However, the ball gets put in play without much power. Grounds out 29.7% of the time, in the bottom 5% of Big 12 hitters. Above-average Fly Out rate, 0.262 per plate appearance, and low HR rate, 0.046 per plate appearance, indicate that Todd doesn’t hit the ball hard in the air. Would likely benefit from an increase in exit velocity and an improved launch angle.

Walks are about average. Todd puts the ball in play avoid striking out more than most, but that seems to manifest in the form of weakly hit grounders and fly balls. Would like to see an increase in BB/PA. Pitchers should pitch to their strengths. Todd will defend the plate late in the count but is prone to weak contact.

Zach Zubia — INF, University of Texas — 6’4″, 230 lbs, RHH, Redshirt Junior

Zubia’s power numbers are a little bit below average, but he just needs to convert more of his batted fly ball opportunities into HRs, whether it’s through a launch angle, exit velocity, or strength increase. The high BB rate is an indication that he has a good eye for balls and strikes, but also potentially a signal that pitchers avoid throwing to him, which makes sense considering the high K rate. With Zubia’s propensity for fly outs and Ks, that’s where pitchers should attack, trying to induce pop-ups or swings and misses.

Player Overview
Zubia’s defining trait is his control of the bat and the plate. His BB rate of 0.183 is elite, within the 96th percentile, but he strikes out 20.7% of the time, below average. Still gets on base at an above-average clip, 0.385 per plate appearance, as the superb BB rate compensates for his low batting average of 0.252.   Grounds out at a 0.144 rate/PA, ranking him in the 88th percentile, one of the best at avoiding weak outs on the ground. Flies out at a 0.245 rate. Puts the ball in the air a lot, but converts only 0.081 of those fly balls into HRs, a mark that ranks just below average in the 42nd percentile. Gets extra-bases at a 0.072 clip, just below average.
